POSITION SUMMARY

unCommon Construction’s Campus Workshop Facilitator role is a new opportunity for a current staff member, partner, or other member of the community to become a facilitator for instructional and training workshops at the unCommon Campus. For current staff, this role is offered in addition to their existing role and responsibilities and involves supplemental compensation at a variable rate based on the opportunity. For guest facilitators, the rate of compensation is set based on their proposed fee and the anticipated revenue from their workshops. Facilitators from outside the organization may be paid as independent contractors, and all facilitators may elect to waive their instructor fee as a form of volunteerism.

This role is flexible based on learning opportunities desired by our community and the skills facilitators have to offer. We have some ideas for what this might look like, but we are also open to your ideas. For example:

  • DIY Classes: Build your own Mardi Gras Ladder Box, Birdhouse, Cutting board, Bookshelf, etc.
  • Homeowner Series: Fixing drywall, Hanging and anchoring decor, Electrical 101, Weatherizing your home, etc.
  • Facilitating events or programming: A series of classes to build basic tool proficiency for young people, hosting a birthday party DIY class, or something else you’re interested in!

The Facilitator will serve as the instructional leader for workshops and classes, engaging with various members of unCommon’s staff, such as the:

  • Director of Curriculum and Training for instructor qualification, session planning, leadership, feedback, and improvements.
  • Campus Director for session logistics, facility usage, and learner enrollment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrable content area expertise for the subject matter.
  • Available to successfully complete unCommon’s Facilitator Training & Orientation.
  • Intrinsic motivation to achieve goals and outcomes, and a growth mindset that embraces feedback in all its forms as a way to continuously improve.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex procedures, tasks, and ideas in ways that are easy to understand through routine written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency with various digital and technology platforms for scheduling and communications, such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and the like.
  • Must be willing and available to complete a background check, CPR/1st Aid, Mandated Reporter, and other trainings as assigned.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Planning for Success
    • Create and submit a syllabus and/or lesson plan for approval.
    • Prepare lesson materials for smooth session flow, objectives, and learning outcomes.
    • Ensure enrollment goals by helping to promote the opportunity to potential participants.
  • Instructional Leadership
    • Incorporate uCC’s best practices for instructional leadership, learner engagement, and cycles of feedback throughout the lesson to create a learning environment that is fun and safe.
    • Achieve successful outcomes such that a high percentage of learners complete projects and/or pass informal assessments at the conclusion of the session, resulting from high levels of participation and satisfaction.
  • Assessment & Follow Up
    • Complete a brief post-session report about successes, challenges, and outcomes to submit to uCC leadership.
    • Ensure all facilities are left in the same condition or better than they were found…leave no trace.
