Who we are:
The Roots of Music is an afterschool program offering music education for over 200 K-12 students across New Orleans. Our flagship program, the Marching Crusaders Band, serves kids ages 9-14 from low-income households and provides them with hot meals and round-trip transportation to reduce common barriers to participation. Five days a week, 12 months a year, our program delivers over 2,500 hours of music education and academic tutoring, over 30,400 nutritious hot meals, and 1,400 bus journeys. Founded in 2007 by Derrick Tabb, our campus is in the historic Treme at St. Peter Claver School.
About The Roots Studio Academy:
The Roots Academy is a comprehensive 10-month program designed to teach youth ages 14 – 18 the skills needed to run a successful music production business. The academy provides intensive training in audio engineering, studio production, and music business management. Students will gain certification in industry-standard software, experience in live and studio recording, and foundational knowledge in music theory, financial literacy, and business management. Classes are held Monday – Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
What we’re looking for:
The Roots of Music is searching for an experienced and enthusiastic Audio Engineering and Studio Production Coordinator. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching, skilled in audio engineering, and capable of coordinating studio band performances that benefit the academy. This role involves delivering high-quality instruction, mentoring students, and managing studio operations to support the goals set forth for The Roots of Music’s Studio Academy. Works in tandem with Program Manager during Academic Enrichment to support tutoring, academic mentorship, and music instruction. The position reports directly to the Artistic Director of The Roots of Music.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Delivery:
Provide support during Academic Enrichment to ensure tutoring, music instruction and academic enrichment via Berklee Pulse is a success.
Lead the teaching of audio engineering, studio production, live audio recording, mixing, and mastering techniques.
Instruct students in music theory, financial literacy, and business management.
Ensure students gain practical experience with industry-standard software and studio equipment.
Student Engagement and Mentorship:
Create an engaging and supportive learning environment that fosters student creativity and growth.
Provide individual mentorship to help students develop their skills and professional goals.
Monitor and assess student progress, offering constructive feedback to facilitate their development.
Studio Coordination and Management:
Oversee the use and maintenance of studio equipment and software, ensuring everything is in working order.
Assist with the setup and teardown of equipment and manage studio operations effectively.
Coordinate studio band activities and performances, including scheduling, rehearsals, and public engagements that benefit the academy.
Accompany studio band for all performances; and activities as needed.
Program Coordination and Communication:
Collaborate with partnering studio and The Roots of Music to ensure smooth operation and alignment with program goals.
Work with other instructors and program staff to ensure a cohesive educational experience.
Participate in program planning, evaluation, and improvement meetings.
Community and Industry Relations:
Build and maintain relationships with industry professionals, potential sponsors, and community partners.
Promote the academy within the community to attract new students and opportunities for collaboration.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Music Technology, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in audio engineering and studio production.
Previous experience teaching or mentoring youth is highly desirable.
Proficiency with industry-standard audio engineering software and studio equipment.
Strong understanding of music theory, recording techniques, and music business management.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to inspire and engage students from diverse backgrounds.
Proven experience in coordinating live performances and managing studio activities.
Work Hour Requirements:
Availability to work Monday – Thursday from 3 PM – 7 PM.
Must accompany Studio Academy students to performances/gigs even if outside the above stated times.

Background check clearance will be required.
Regular, dependable attendance, and punctuality.
Physical Demands:
This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking.
May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
Involves manual dexterity for using a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
Benefits:
Part time - $25 per hour
Mileage Reimbursement available at current IRS Standard Mileage Rate
