Position Summary
Incumbent in this position will have the responsibility of providing veterinary care and perform other related duties in the Division of Animal Care at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana under the direction of the Associate Director of Animal Care. The incumbent will provide clinical veterinary care to animals; manage preventive medical programs; participate in IACUC activities; perform post approval monitoring of protocols; provide training programs; provide consultation for research staff; supervise employees, and any additional duties requested by Associate Director. The division of Animal Care is composed of two animal facilities with a total of 22,007 square feet. The present number of investigators utilizing these facilities are 63. The investigators are involved in 324 research projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and diagnostic care for the LSUHSC research animals. This will include all the following:
- Perform routine clinical rounds in vivaria to diagnose and treat sick or injured animals as well as site visits to animal vendors and extramural satellite facilities where animals are maintained.
- Provide clinical, diagnostic, and surgical services and care to animals.
- Manage preventive medical programs, including rodent health surveillance, quarantine, and diagnostic laboratory activities.
- Advises staff on preventive health programs, such as quarantine evaluation of new arrivals, sentinel surveillance of rodent colonies, annual physical examinations, and semi-annual tuberculin testing of non-human primates.
- Oversee surgical and post-operative procedures. Prepare and maintain animal health and surgery records.
- Participate in IACUC activities, including investigator interactions, protocol review post-approval monitoring, and inspections.
- Ensure university compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and policies.
- Provide service to and train research staff on various components of proper animal use, preparation of animals for surgery, anesthesia, surgical technique, postoperative monitoring, injections, and sample collection.
- Provide weekend/holiday/after-hours coverage for veterinary emergencies in concert with other professional staff.
- Provide clinical services for investigators and labs as a fee-for-service offering.
- Assist the Associate Director in supervising the management of the Division of Animal Care, as it relates to the health of the research animals. This will include the following:
- Participate in establishing, implementing and monitoring policies and procedures involving laboratory animal care and use that is in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and current accreditation standards.
- Supervision of animal housing to ensure separation of species and prevention of disease spread.
- Monitoring husbandry practices that may affect animal health.
- Consulting with the Director and Assistant Director concerning other management related issues.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate in Veterinarian Medicine. Eligible for USDA accreditation (accreditation preferred) along with two years veterinary experience in a clinical or research lab setting. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. ACLAM certification in one year with bonus.
