Green Light New Orleans (GLNO), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been at the forefront of fostering a sustainable future for our community since its inception in 2007. Rooted in the belief that environmental stewardship, when combined with the transformative power of art, can drive significant change, GLNO has diligently addressed three critical issues in New Orleans: energy efficiency, food resiliency, and rainwater management.

The journey began in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with a mission to replace inefficient incandescent lightbulbs with energy-efficient CFLs and LEDs. This initiative has since reached over 30,000 households across the Greater New Orleans area, resulting in the replacement of over 600,000 bulbs and a reduction of the city's CO₂ output by 266 million pounds by 2018. In 2012, GLNO expanded efforts to combat food insecurity by teaching urban farming techniques and installing uniquely painted backyard vegetable gardens. Recognizing subsidence as a pressing issue, Green Light launched the Rain Barrel Program in 2015 to alleviate the strain on New Orleans' stormwater management system. Each rain barrel, up-cycled by volunteers into unique pieces of art, serves not only as a functional tool but as a symbol of community resilience.

In the past five years alone, Green Light New Orleans has served 2906 households, installing 26 gardens, 2089 rain barrels, distributing 75,210 free compact florescent lightbulbs, and providing 4031 square feet of attic insulation. These efforts are supported by a robust volunteer workforce, engaging an average of 675 volunteers annually. To put this impact into perspective, the 2089 rain barrels installed since 2019 have retained approximately 3,370,943,257 gallons of stormwater—equivalent to filling the Caesar’s Super Dome over 3.5 times with water that would otherwise burden the city’s infrastructure.

Green Light New Orleans’ mission is simple yet profound: to provide sustainable solutions to individual homes, encouraging collective action towards a more resilient community. Through the installation of rain barrels, backyard vegetable gardens, and the distribution of energy-efficient lightbulbs, we strive to empower residents to contribute to a greener, more sustainable New Orleans.
