<p><b>Inspire the next generation of computer scientists in Louisiana! Become a Microsoft TEALS volunteer.</b></p><p><br></p><p>Computer science (CS) skills prepare students for in-demand roles and open pathways to economic opportunity, but the students who need them most are the least likely to have access to rigorous CS courses. </p><p> </p><p>Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) is a Microsoft Philanthropies program that connects classroom teachers with tech-industry volunteers, through remote and in classroom learning, to create sustainable CS and technology education programs at your school. Over time, teachers learn to teach CS independently to ensure all young people are equipped for the future. </p><p><br></p><p>Over the past ten years, the TEALS program has helped over 85,000 students across the United States and British Columbia, Canada learn computer science. We are excited to expand our program to new states, including Louisiana, and to focus our efforts on bringing computer science to schools that predominantly serve Black and African American students. This is part of Microsoft’s greater commitment to take action on strengthening these communities and addressing racial injustice. Learn more by reading <a href="https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2020/06/23/addressing-racial-injustice/">this blog post</a> from our CEO, Satya Nadella. </p><p> </p><p>Facts about CS education in Louisiana (from Code.org): </p><p> • In Louisiana, the average salary for jobs related to CS is $71,000 (almost $30,000 higher than the average salary) </p><p> • Less than 10% of high schools in Greater New Orleans offer an AP CS course </p><p> • Less than 25% of high schools in Louisiana teach a foundational CS course </p><p> • In 2019, 158,557 AP CS tests were taken nationally; Louisiana represented just 850 of those tests (.5%); of the Louisiana test takers, only 17% identified as Black or African American, 10% identified as Latinx/Hispanic and 30% identified as female </p><p><br></p><p>You should consider becoming a TEALS volunteer if you enjoy… </p><p> • Inspiring and mentoring the next generation (in-person or remotely)</p><p> • Supporting educators </p><p> • Making computer science accessible to everyone </p><p><br></p><p>TEALS is currently seeking Louisiana-based volunteers.
