Job Description

Who we are:

The Roots of Music is an afterschool program offering music education for over 200 K-12 students across New Orleans. Our flagship program, the Marching Crusaders Band, serves kids ages 9-14 from low-income households and provides them with hot meals and round-trip transportation to reduce common barriers to participation. Five days a week, 12 months a year, our program delivers over 2,500 hours of music education and academic tutoring, over 30,400 nutritious hot meals, and 1,400 bus journeys. Founded in 2007 by Derrick Tabb, our campus is in the historic Gentilly neighborhood in New Orleans. 

What we’re looking for:

The Roots of Music (TROM) is searching for a Director of Finance who will be responsible for all finance and accounting functions for The Roots of Music.  The candidate must be professional, dependable, highly organized, and detail oriented.  The Director of Finance work closely with the Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer to ensure the process and execution of programs are seamless.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting

  • Oversee all accounting functions to ensure proper systems and controls
  • Responsible for maintaining integrity of general ledgers and supporting documentation
  • Coordinate billing, invoicing, and collection of all payments 
  • Process deposits and record revenues in the accounting system
  • Oversee the accounts payable process including processing vendor payments and recording all payments in the accounting system
  • Oversee cash management and all banking functions
  • Reconcile all bank and investment accounts monthly
  • Reconcile all credit cards monthly
  • Reconcile all other balance sheet accounts monthly
  • Oversee the monthly close process 
  • Prepare the annual budget
  • Oversee cash management including cashflow forecasting
  • Monitor performance against budgets 
  • Maintain proper tracking of all restricted donations in accordance with GAAP
  • Assist with grant reporting 
  • Work with the Development Director to ensure finances align with development and program goals
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial reporting to management, finance committee and Board of Directors
  • Responsible for coordinating with the CPA firm for the timely completion of the external audit
  • Responsible for coordinating with the CPA firm for the timely completion of the Form 990
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
  • Assist with other financial matters as needed

Payroll Management

  • Oversee payroll processing for all employees
  • Record payroll including allocation of payroll to functional classes
  • Monitor the allocation of payroll expense adjusting as necessary
  • Track employee leave
  • Maintain accurate payroll records

Skills and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • At least 5 years of successful, relevant experience in an accounting department or CPA firm
  • Computer proficiency a must, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) 
  • Experience in QuickBooks accounting software preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting
  • Experience with audit preparation and grant compliance
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented person with ability to multi-task
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Effectively work in a team-based, complex, fast-paced environment
  • Highly ethical, particularly in working with confidential and sensitive information

Work Hour Requirements:

  • In-person and full-time.
  • Regular, dependable attendance, and punctuality.

Physical Demands:

  • This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking.
  • May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
  • Involves manual dexterity for using a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
