Education

Required - High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Required - 3 years’ experience in Security, Law Enforcement, or Military

Certifications

Required - Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association Valid driver’s license in the state of practice and clean DMV report Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI), and firearms training Completion of K-9 training within 60 days of hire

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individual.
  • Possess technical knowledge of canine behavior and specialized canine techniques, methods and procedures as acquired through specialized training and practice.
  • Ability to accurately recognize the clinical symptoms of distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, rabies, ectoparasites and other illnesses to include gastric dilation, upper respiratory infection, poisoning and heat exhaustion in a canine.
  • Must be able to differentiate between canine and zoonotic diseases that are communicable to humans.
  • Must be able to kennel the canine officer at the handler’s residence.
  • Proficient knowledge of Adam’s Law and Meghan’s Law.
Job Duties
  • Develops and complies with canine security policies and operational standards.
  • Performs opening/lockdown of all buildings as approved by Administration and participates in emergency response and related preparedness drills.
  • Routinely reviews and inspects facilities to mitigate criminal activity and locate missing patients, investigates accidents/incidents as assigned reporting occurrences in a timely manner.
  • Adheres strictly to safe canine handling practices, security rules, regulations, and policies to ensure the safety of all persons and property.
  • Establishes an ongoing preventative medicine program for the overall health care of the canine officer and examines the canine daily to ensure early detection of illness, disease or injury.
  • Administers emergency first aid measures to protect the health of the canine officer when needed.
  • Ensures kennel facilities meet safety, sanitation, health standards and adequate dietary requirements are being maintained.
  • Conducts continual training of the canine officer to maintain a high level of proficiency.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
