Job Description

The Center for Community-Engaged Artificial Intelligence (CEAI) is a university center of excellence dedicated to leveraging the power of AI for community and societal impact. As a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, students, and community partners, CEAI leads cross-disciplinary scientific research, facilitates project-based learning experiences, conducts extensive community outreach, hosts workshops and symposiums, and awards seed grants to support human-centered AI research across the university.

The Tulane University Innovation Institute (TUII) is designed to help bridge the gap between university research and the marketplace/public sphere, catalyzing the real-world impact of Tulane’s world-class, audacious research. This includes commercialization efforts centered around a gap fund/proof-of-concept and launching new startups.

While many innovators within the Tulane community have ideas for leveraging AI and computer science to solve challenging societal problems, they often lack engineering support and AI expertise needed to prototype and iterate solutions to these challenges. The AI Innovation Engineer will be responsible for interfacing with innovators at Tulane to support development programs and AI-empowered solutions to foundational challenges. They will also support Tulane researchers in AI-enhanced research projects, in addition to working with CEAI and TUII to identify areas of opportunity for multidisciplinary innovation and research. This will involve meeting with university innovators and scientists, providing programming and application development support, providing AI engineering expertise and support, and creation of prototypes and minimal viable products.

This position supports the innovation goals of Tulane, CEAI, and TUII by:

  • Support the creation of prototype applications and AI tools for Tulane innovators
  • Provide AI/ML subject matter expertise to Tulane innovators
  • Assist Tulane researchers with AI-related or AI-enabled research projects
  • Provide insights and research support to CEAI and TUII leadership as they identify opportunities for larger AI-enabled innovation initiatives

The AI Innovation Engineer works at the direction of the Executive Director of Commercialization in the Tulane University Innovation Institute and is co-managed by the leadership of the Center for Community Engaged AI and in cooperation with all internal, pertinent offices such as in-house counsel, the University Office of Research, the Office of Technology Transfer, IRB, Office of Advancement, Communications and Marketing, Department of Computer Science etc.

Minimum Education
  • BS, MS, or PhD with AI/Computer Science Background
  • 0-3 years experience in computer sciences/AI/software development industry
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Tulane research strengths.
  • Work in academic, non-profit, or corporate scientific settings (University, Research Institute, Company, VC Firm, Foundation).
  • Software/app development experience.
