Division Overview:

Ampirical’s Substation Engineering Division has recognized national expertise in the planning and design of new substations and high voltage electrical substations and switchyards. The mixture of our talents to offer all aspects of substation/switchyard design services, our trained resources to get the job done, and technical knowledge allows us to design a multitude of solutions to fit the client’s need.

Your Role: Designer - Site

The Substation Civil Designer – Site Focus is responsible for developing detailed civil site design drawings and construction packages for electrical substation facilities. This includes grading, drainage, site layout, fencing, conduit routing, and associated civil details. The designer works under the guidance of engineers and senior designers to ensure all site related drawings meet industry codes, client standards, and project requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or Bentley Substation to develop 2D drawings and 3D models for site‑related substation packages
  • Prepare grading, drainage, site layout, fencing, access roads, and associated civil detail drawings
  • Support development of construction packages, including IFR/IFA/IFC drawings
  • Apply basic understanding of water flow and site drainage principles to preliminary layouts
  • Interpret surveys, topographic data, and basic drainage or geotechnical reports with moderate oversight
  • Coordinate with civil/electrical engineers and supervisors to obtain design inputs and resolve design issues
  • Understand equipment clearances, access requirements, and constructability considerations for site design
  • Apply client standards, industry codes (ASCE, AASHTO, ACI), and quality expectations with moderate oversight
  • Perform preliminary grading using Civil 3D tools (surface modeling, alignments, profiles) with guidance
  • Conduct self‑checks for accuracy and completeness before submitting for internal review
  • Participate in field visits with senior staff to collect site measurements, photos, and verification data
Who You Are:
  • 2+ years of substation or civil design experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology required (or additional two years’ experience in lieu of degree)
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or Bentley Substation
  • Basic understanding of grading, drainage, and site development concepts
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with Bluebeam/PDF markup tools
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
  • Support collaborative team efforts and contribute to design discussions under supervision
