Job Summary 

 

The Preservation Resource Center’s Communications Director creates content and curates the organization's public-facing messaging. The role includes serving as the editor of our award-winning, bi-monthly magazine, Preservation in Print; producing and curating the content for our robust social media accounts, our website, e-blasts, and more; disseminating news about the organization and securing media coverage; and managing special communications projects, such as videos, exhibits, or books. The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the rest of the senior staff to best understand and share information about the organization.  The Communications Director will oversee and direct the Website and Social Media Coordinator.   

 

Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Editor, Preservation in Print Magazine 
  • Produce six issues of Preservation in Print magazine each year. 
  • Curate the Table of Contents for every issue, and secure writers and photographers for all features. 
  • Write stories and content for each issue. 
  • Copy edit magazine. 
  • Coordinate with the graphic designer to get the magazine laid out, and the printer to get it ordered. 
  • Directs website and Social Media Coordinator.  
  • Coordinate with the ad salesperson to ensure all ads are placed in the magazine. 
  • Curate PRC's social media content. Provide text and photos to colleagues for posting on Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, and other sites 
  • Curate PRC's website. Direct all content for PRCNO.org and strategize on how to grow the site's content to best meet the PRC’s mission. Work with staff to get fresh content onto the site on a weekly basis. 
  • Manage e-blasts and other public outreach. 
  • Coordinate outreach and messaging with the Development Director to ensure a healthy balance of informative content with event and fundraising promotion. 
  • Secure earned media - get media interviews for PRC's staff to elevate our public profile, both for events, special initiatives, and generally, for topical stories related to historic preservation. 

 

 

  • Serve as PRC's press liaison. This includes writing and disseminating press releases as necessary. 
  • Manage special communications projects, such as videos, new book publications, and exhibits. 
  • Use PRC's magazine and social media accounts to promote earned revenue initiatives, such as neighborhood tours. 
  • Be responsible for all the technological needs of the PRC.  
  • Assist other department heads as needed with communications-related initiatives. 
  • Assist with PRC events as needed. 

 

Qualifications & Skills:  

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, preservation, or a related field. 
  • 3 years of professional related experience preferred in writing, editing, and media relations. 
  • Knowledge of the New Orleans media landscape and contacts within, preferred. 
  • Strong writing skills for various media are essential. 
  • Understanding of social media platforms and how to use algorithms to grow following, as well as an understanding of web SEO to improve traffic. 
  • Proficiency in Adobe Design Suite and Microsoft Office Suite preferred. 
  • Highly organized, with excellent attention to detail. 
  • Personable and respectful to others, from team members to constituents. The ability to get along with colleagues and collaborate successfully is a must. 
  • Knowledge of historic preservation, architecture, or cultural heritage is a plus. Passion for the mission of the PRC is a must. 

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: 

  • This position is based in New Orleans and requires occasional evening and weekend work to attend PRC events and community activities.

We PROMOTE awareness through our award-winning publication Preservation in Print and through our Digital Preservation Newsroom, which reaches a wide audience online with informative video series, advocacy updates, fun architecture quizzes and more.
