Reports To: Vice President of Operations

About the Role

The Millwork Department Head is responsible for overseeing and managing all facets of the Millwork Department, ensuring compliance with safety standards, maintenance, and operational efficiency. Primary Responsibilities

  • Department Operations: Oversee day-to-day Millwork department operations, ensuring adequate staffing and material availability to meet production goals. Maintain and upkeep equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications to ensure longevity and performance. Coordinate with the VP of Operations to schedule outside service when required while maintaining departmental productivity.
  • Project Scheduling & Staffing: Coordinate with Project Leads to ensure production targets outlined in work orders are met from both a scheduling and labor-budget standpoint. Ensure weekly staffing levels align with workload demands.
  • Project Estimation: Collaborate with Project Management and Sales teams to provide accurate labor and material estimates during design development and pre-production phases.
  • Inventory Management: Track commonly used lumber, sheet goods, hardware, and consumables. Report inventory levels monthly and place regular inventory orders to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Team Leadership: Manage all Downtown FabWorks employees and contractors assigned to the department. Ensure adherence to company quality standards, Code of Conduct, and proper timekeeping under correct job codes.
  • Cross-Department Coordination: Work closely with other Department Leads to streamline material flow through production. Verify that incoming materials meet quality requirements specified on work orders and clearly communicate expectations to upstream departments.
  • Daily Reporting: Produce daily departmental reports ensuring accurate labor allocation and documentation of material and inventory consumption.
  • Training & Process Improvement: Continuously develop personal skills and the skills of departmental staff. Test, document, and implement new materials, construction methods, and processes to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Capital Projects: Make recommendations to the VP of Operations regarding capital investments that improve departmental capacity, safety, or efficiency.
  • Department Coverage: Coordinate with other Department Leads to ensure continuity of departmental responsibilities during absences.
  • Health & Safety: Ensure appropriate PPE and first aid supplies are stocked and used correctly. Ensure all injuries or incidents are documented and reported per company policy.
  • Anti-Harassment & Workplace Conduct: Enforce Downtown FabWorks’ anti-harassment policy and promote a safe, equitable, and respectful work environment. Report incidents immediately to the VP of Operations or Owner.

Knowledge & Skills

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in millwork, scenic fabrication, or related production environments with demonstrated leadership responsibility.

Technical & Software Skills:

  • Scenic and architectural millwork fabrication methods
  • Reading and commenting on construction and shop drawings
  • Material takeoffs and estimating support
  • Use of stationary and handheld woodworking equipment
  • Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Payroll and time-tracking software
  • Inventory and job-cost tracking systems

Work Schedule & Travel

This is a full-time, salaried exempt position with a typical schedule of approximately 40 hours per week. This position is 100% in-person with no hybrid or remote work. No travel is required.

Physical Job Requirements

Standing for extended periods. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 100 lbs. Working in an active fabrication shop environment with required PPE.

Compensation

Salary Range: $62,000 – $73,500 annually, based on experience and fit, plus benefits as outlined in the company handbook.
