Job Description
As a successful Elementary Special Education Teacher you will serve as a member of the Student Support team offering educational, social, behavioral, and emotional services to students. At Homer Plessy we strive to understand and meet all students at their level, and provide our staff with the tools and resources to intervene successfully for those students. This role is not only important in uplifting individual students, but also to enhance special education and interventions throughout Homer Plessy Community Schools. The Special Education Teacher will report to the Chief of Student Support, the Director of Special Education, and the School Principal.
Position Description and Expectations
• Instruct students on modified state standard aligned lessons that include strategies that meet the needs of the individual students
• Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare reports on children when needed
• Meet and confer with stakeholders to develop individual educational programs designed to promote students’ educational, physical, social and emotional development
• Work with grade level team to support academic, behavioral, and emotional growth of all students
• Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and community
• Maintain a safe working environment in the performance of all school-related duties.
• Accept feedback and coaching as an essential part of development and growth
• Understand the grade level standards for the grade/subject
• Differentiates instruction based on student needs
• Modifies long term plans and unit plans as needed
• Utilizes data system for efficient tracking of student data
• Reteaches content based on data trends as necessary
• Sets and monitors progress on academic goals with students and families
• Participates in all professional development
Qualifications
Well qualified applicants will have:
• Experience with various academic, behavioral, and emotional intervention resources
• Experience working with students with special needs
• Strong content knowledge (Louisiana Grade Level Expectations)
• Knowledge of relationship based behavior management skills and techniques
Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Certification - Special Education Teacher (or working towards certification)
• Belief that all students deserve a quality education, regardless of academic or behavioral need
• Desire to implement the arts into all subjects, and to successfully create a project based learning environment
