Your Role: Sr Transmission Planning Engineer

Position Summary We are seeking a Senior Transmission Planning Engineer to help shape the future of our transmission planning and interconnection studies practice. In this role, you’ll collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop models, analyze system performance, and deliver actionable insights that guide strategic decisions. This is a high-impact position within Ampirical’s growing studies team, offering opportunities for technical leadership and career growth within a rapidly expanding engineering firm.

Job Duties

  • Perform transmission planning studies, including power flow, transient stability, reactive planning, and related studies using industry-standard tools (e.g., PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld).
  • Lead interconnection studies, including feasibility, system impact (e.g., load flow, short circuit, stability, voltage flicker), harmonics, EMT, and facility studies in compliance with FERC, NERC, and regional reliability standards.
  • Develop automation scripts and tools to effectively conduct studies.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations.
  • Support regulatory filings, planning meetings, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Prepare proposals, including scopes of work and budgets, for transmission planning and interconnection studies.
  • Interface with clients to understand technical requirements, present study results, and support business development.
  • Provide quality control for deliverables.
  • Mentor and train other engineers and provide technical leadership on complex projects.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in building a knowledge management system for the transmission planning practice, including automation tools, technical report templates, and technical training materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related fields from an ABET accredited university; a graduate degree is a plus
  • 5+ years of experience performing transmission planning or interconnection studies
  • Professional Engineer (P.E., P.Eng.) license OR In lieu of Professional Engineer license, 2+ years of additional experience is required
  • Experience with relevant industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN, Gridscale X, ETAP, or other equivalent software.
  • Experience with technical report writing and presenting complex technical information to clients
  • Ability to mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to development of the studies practice area
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
