Benefits

Markdown Formatting Guide

This guide outlines the basic syntax for converting common HTML elements into clean, readable Markdown.

Headings

HTML headings (<h1> through <h6>) map directly to Markdown hash symbols (#).

| HTML | Markdown |
| :--- | :--- |
| <h1>Title</h1> | # Title |
| <h2>Section</h2> | ## Section |
| <h3>Subsection</h3> | ### Subsection |

Emphasis

HTML tags for text emphasis are converted as follows:

  • Bold: <strong> or <b> becomes **text**
  • Italic: <em> or <i> becomes *text*

For example: <strong>Important bold text</strong> becomes Important bold text. <em>Emphasis italic text</em> becomes Emphasis italic text.

Links

HTML anchor tags (<a>) are converted to the standard Markdown link format: `Link Text`.

An example link: <a href="https://www.example.com">Visit Example</a>

Becomes: An example link: Visit Example

Lists

Unordered Lists (Bulleted)

HTML unordered lists (<ul> with <li> items) become bulleted lists using asterisks (*) or hyphens (-).

```html
<ul>
<li>First item</li>
<li>Second item</li>
</ul>
```

Becomes:

  • First item
  • Second item
Ordered Lists (Numbered)

HTML ordered lists (<ol> with <li> items) become numbered lists.

```html
<ol>
<li>Step one</li>
<li>Step two</li>
</ol>
```

Becomes:

  1. Step one
  2. Step two

Code Formatting

  • Inline Code: HTML <code> elements are represented using backticks: ` `code() ``.
  • Code Blocks: Preformatted blocks (often using <pre><code>...</code></pre>) are represented using triple backticks, optionally with syntax highlighting specified (e.g., ` ```javascript `).

Example inline code: The function call is calculate_total().

Example code block:
```python
def greet(name):
print(f"Hello, {name}!")
```

Blockquotes

HTML blockquotes (<blockquote>) are converted using the greater-than symbol (>).

This is a quote from another source.

Horizontal Rules

HTML horizontal rules (<hr>) are represented by three or more hyphens (---), asterisks (***), or underscores (___).
