CLASS TITLE: AIRPORT ASSISTANT MAINTENANCE MANAGER - AIRFIELD (CLASS CODE 8140)

REPORTS TO: AIRPORT MAINTENANCE MANAGER
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
SALARY RANGE: $60,310.00 - $80,413.00 Annually
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Airport Maintenance Manager, the Airport Assistant Maintenance Manager - Airfield is responsible for assisting in the planning, coordination, and supervision of maintenance and repair activities for the airfield facilities, including runways, taxiways, lighting systems, drainage, grounds, and related infrastructure at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
This position involves administrative, technical, and supervisory duties related to ensuring the airfield meets all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations and standards for safe and efficient operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Airport Maintenance Manager in the development and implementation of comprehensive maintenance programs for airfield pavements, lighting, drainage, and grounds.
- Supervise, schedule, and direct maintenance personnel, including City employees and contractors, engaged in airfield maintenance and repair projects.
- Conduct regular inspections of the airfield, including pavement condition surveys, lighting system checks, and drainage system functionality, documenting findings and initiating corrective actions.
- Oversee the execution of work orders, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established procedures and regulatory requirements (FAA, TSA, etc.).
- Manage the inventory of maintenance materials, tools, and equipment necessary for airfield operations.
- Assist in the preparation and administration of the annual maintenance budget for the airfield division.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with Airport Operations, Air Traffic Control (ATC), airlines, tenants, and external regulatory agencies.
- Respond to and manage emergency maintenance situations on the airfield, such as pavement failures, lighting outages, or debris removal, ensuring rapid restoration of safe operating conditions.
- Review and approve contractor submittals, progress reports, and invoices related to airfield maintenance projects.
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the Airport's Emergency Response Plan as it pertains to airfield maintenance.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Facilities Management, or a closely related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in facility maintenance, construction, or infrastructure management, with at least two (2) years of direct experience related to airport airside operations or airfield maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to appointment.
PREFERRED:
- Experience working in an FAA-regulated airport environment.
- Professional certifications such as A.A.E. (Accredited Airport Executive) or similar maintenance/facility management certifications.
- Knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars (ACs) related to airfield standards (e.g., AC 150/5300 series).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of civil infrastructure maintenance, particularly related to airfield pavements, lighting, and drainage systems.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to manage diverse teams and contractors.
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and regulatory documents.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with technical staff, management, and regulatory officials.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks under pressure.
- Proficiency in standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite).

- Work is performed primarily in an office setting but requires frequent field work on the active airport ramp and airfield, often in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
- Must be able to walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to read documents, inspect airfield markings, and operate equipment.
- May be required to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be subject to call-out during emergencies.
