Education Required - High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience Required - None. Preferred - 1 year experience in phlebotomy and/or medical assistance procedures

Certifications Required - Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Communication and customer service skills

Job Duties

  • Perform donor health history confidential interview according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations. Perform volunteer, autologous, directed donor and therapeutic phlebotomy collections with the appropriate documentation. Computer entries and/or written documentation are reviewed for accuracy.
  • Perform donor health screening including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and hemoglobin and hematocrit determinations according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations.
  • Select and prepare an appropriate venipuncture site according to SOP, AABB Standards and FDA Regulations. Provide the donor with accurate information, provide care for adverse reactions, including placing donor in the Trendelenburg position, continuously assessing vital signs and providing oral fluid replacement. Provide post donation instructions to donor.
  • Maintain a positive customer service environment during interactions with donors, co-workers, corporate chair people, patients and visitors.
  • Willingly accepts and supports management decisions. Adhere to department dress code, attends staff meetings and participates in departmental training programs.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style
  • Successfully completes all annual requirements and individual competency.
