Job Description

This is skilled trades work installing, maintaining, inspecting, altering and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION As of November 14, 1994, employees must possess the appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance, inspection, alteration and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of building mechanical and energy management systems.
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, inspecting, altering and repairing heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to install, maintain, inspect, alter and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools and equipment properly.
  • Ability to read and clearly understand blueprints.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to carry, erect, climb, and maneuver on ladders and/or scaffolds; work in tight and awkward spaces; work off of roofs, cat walks, and other elevated areas.
  • Ability to carry or otherwise move loads of 50 pounds or more (pipe, wire, tool boxes, etc.).
  • Ability to understand and apply University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges.
  • Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work area in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries to the people or damage to the vehicles.
  • Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Additional Position Information:

LSU Health Sciences Center Division of Facility Services in New Orleans is seeking motivated applicants for the position of HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic.

The person applying must possess two years of experience or training in the installation and/or maintenance of heating, ventilating, or air conditioning systems.

Starting rate of pay is $21.05 and the 1st Quartile rate of pay is $25.26 but may be adjusted dependent upon applicants’ qualifications. There is also an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only.

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • maintains, inspects, and repairs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies
  • maintains and repairs electrical wiring for motors, controls and other electrical circuits relative to heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • operates, monitors and controls system-wide output
  • may serve as sole operator on an assigned shift (evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays) during campus emergencies and/or staffing shortages
  • checks all equipment for proper fluid levels and operation before using
  • plan, price, and order materials necessary for repairs using proper facility purchasing rules/regulations
