Job Description
Operating Engineer 1 or 2
LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking motivated applicants for the title of Operating Engineer 1 or 2. This position is included in a Career Progression Group. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an (Operating Engineer 1 or 2) depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Please refer to the ‘Job Specifications’ tab located at the top of the LA Careers ‘Current Job Opportunities’ page of the Civil Service website for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level.
The starting rate is $19.67 per hour, rate may be adjusted dependent upon applicants’ qualifications. There is also an additional $1 Longevity Pay, $2 Shift Differential Pay and $3 Weekend Pay for hours worked only.
Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- This is shift work monitoring the LSUHSC-NO building mechanical and energy management system making rounds to visually inspect building systems and making rounds to visually inspect building systems.
- To operate, regulate, monitor, service and maintain ventilation, refrigeration, heating and related machinery and equipment, including pumps and other utility systems.
- Maintains, inspects, and prepares mechanical equipment and components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies.
- Cleans and/or replace this filters on heating/air condition units as necessary adjustments to produce desired temperatures; e) response to temperature complaints from building occupants.
- Operates auxiliaries including firing up steam boilers, starting and stopping chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC equipment.
- Reads gauges to check water levels, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps.
- Possesses the ability to properly and safely operate the following equipment: manlift, drill press, and other equipment used in daily task.
- Takes immediate action to personally stop unsafe acts if delay to inform supervisor may allow accident to occur.
- Assist other trades as needed.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
- Must possess at least one year of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of large commercial or industrial stationary engines or mechanical equipment such as air conditioning, heating, refrigerating, pumping, generating, chillers, or closely related system.
- Possession of (or the ability to possess within three [3] months of hire) an Orleans Parish 2nd class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate for steam boilers and at a minimum a 2nd class Stationary Engineer’s Certificate for air conditioning.
- As of November 14, 1994, employees must possess the appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990). Possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).
- Must be available to serve as sole operator for assigned shift work during evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays. Must be available for scheduled shift work after regular working hours and during holidays.
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of building mechanical and energy management systems.
- Skill in the operation, maintenance and repair of building mechanical and energy management systems.

- Ability to read and clearly understand blueprints.

- Ability to carry, erect, climb and maneuver on ladders and/or scaffolds; work in tight and awkward spaces; work off of roofs, catwalks, and other elevated areas.
- Ability to carry or otherwise move loads of 50 pounds or more (pipe, wire, tool boxes, etc.).
- Ability to understand and apply University rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges.
- Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work area in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuries to the people or damage to the vehicles.
- Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
