AmeriCorps House Captain
Rebuilding Together New Orleans
Posted 11/04/19
923 Tchoupitoulas Street, New Orleans, LA, 70130
Job Description
Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) is committed to continue meeting the needs of low-income homeowners in our community. About 30% of RTNO applicants are living with a disability, and many are living in homes without the necessary equipment to safely move around. Because many elderly homeowners in New Orleans are unable to work, they live on the fixed income afforded to them by social security; this lack of disposable income prevents them from making the critical home modifications necessary to facilitate their mobility and independence.
Repairs RTNO providers our clients keep elderly and disabled homeowners in their homes longer, hindering blight from spreading and sustaining the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Our programs provide a variety of accessibility and safety features for homeowners living with a disability to reduce the likelihood of falls, work to preserve their health, and save them money on medical expenses to help sustain financial independence. RTNO has been able to assist more than 500 homeowners since 2005, but our homeowner waitlist continues to grow. Because of AmeriCorps members we are able to leverage our funding to assist additional homeowners and shorten the wait time for these homeowners who are in need of critical repairs.
Position at a Glance
AmeriCorps members serving with RTNO get to see first-hand how the work they’re doing positively impacts the community. The tasks House Captains complete improve the quality of life for all of RTNO’s homeowners, whether it’s through the addition of a wheelchair ramp to allow homeowner mobility and independence, or exterior weatherization repairs to lower utility builds and keep a home clean and healthy. They complete hands-on repairs as part of prep work or punch list for special projects. On project days, AmeriCorps House Captains work with volunteers from all backgrounds and skill levels to complete a variety of construction activities. Wherever possible, they teach and empower volunteers to learn new skills and safely implement them on the worksite.

About Rebuilding Together New Orleans
Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) was founded in 1988. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans or single head of households with minor children.
CURRENT PROGRAM
RTNO has quickly grown into one of the largest home rehabilitation non-profit organization in New Orleans, completing over 650 home repair and community revitalization projects since 2005. By focusing our program in target neighborhoods, RTNO meets the needs of the communities we serve quickly and efficiently by leveraging corporate, private and public dollars, volunteer labor and help from the AmeriCorps program. We are currently focused on meeting the growing need to make homes safer through aging in place repairs, energy-efficiency repairs and moderate kitchen and bathroom repairs. These repairs strengthen neighborhoods by allowing low-income homeowners to stay in their longtime times as the age, inhibiting blight from spreading and keeping invested homeowners in place.
MISSION STATEMENT
Repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives.
VISION STATEMENT
Safe homes and communities for everyone.
HISTORY
Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) started in 1988 as a revitalization program called Christmas in October, modeled after the national Christmas in April program. It was implemented to address the needs of existing homeowners, namely the elderly and disabled who had become ill equipped to manage home repair.
In 1988, 11 homes and 1 school were painted and repaired, utilizing 373 volunteers provided by 14 corporate and community groups. A total budget of $24,349 was raised through corporate donations.
At the start of 2005, RTNO had worked on 900 owner occupied houses, seven neighborhood schools, six community centers, a courthouse and a warehouse through expansion and hardworking volunteers.
After Hurricane Katrina, RTNO modified its mission to aid those displaced by the storm. Instead of only smaller projects, RTNO began to focus on the total renovation and rebuilding of storm-damaged homes. By reinvesting in and restoring the existing housing stock of the city, RTNO was able to bring homeowners back to their homes, as well as provide a model for restoring and preserving New Orleans’ historic neighborhoods. RTNO‘s home rehabilitation program targets the urban poor, who are the population in New Orleans most affected by Hurricane Katrina. Families that return to their homes in New Orleans – rather than live in exile or in a trailer – sustain a constant, stable, healthy living environment while building their equity and regaining financial independence.
