Job Description

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.


The Executive Director ensures strong ethical administration of all aspects of Kinship Center and its daily activities and programs. As the day-to-day leader of Kinship, the ED has oversight of staff, programs, finances, and all record keeping. The ED creates a welcoming environment for participants, staff, and volunteers, encourages the development of skills and relationships among the seniors, and supports the happiness and well-being of those who attend Kinship programming.


Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Relevant higher education degree
  • 5 years of nonprofit experience 
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience
  • Qualified and positive experience with providing useful programming for older adults and understanding of aging issues
  • Experience working with volunteer boards


Skills:

  • Experience with nonprofit management especially small shop organizations (budgets of $500,000 or less), including programming, funding, budgets, accounting, HR, operations, and administration
  • Computer experience and familiarity with Google Suite, Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, Windows 10, Quickbooks, donor database management, and client management software
  • Basic understanding of legal and data privacy protections applicable to Kinship clients 
  • Mature leadership skills, positive personality, and commitment to older adult wellbeing 
  • Experience with managing budgets 
  • Fundraising experience and knowledge ie) GiveNOLA Day, Annual Donor Campaigns, donor relationship management 
  • Patience, empathy, and ability to relate to diverse individuals


Abilities:

  • Manage and support 3-5 staff members and 20+ volunteers
  • Creative ability to generate content (social media, newsletters, donor appeals, etc.) and tell the Kinship story
  • Create and sustain essential fundraisers for the organization
  • Maintain, create, and sustain key partnerships for the organization. This includes, but is not limited to program partners, grant partners, the New Orleans Council on Aging. 
  • Strong grant writing and reporting
  • Donor relations and fundraising from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Ability to create strong individual, community, and corporate partnerships to support programs and Kinship operations
  • Ability to manage and develop budgets


Responsibilities

  1. Programs: Sustains and develops relevant programs to meet the needs of participants and their families/caregivers. Meets monthly with participant delegates to the Members Council to receive suggestions and input from participants. Works with the Programs Coordinator to manage key program partnerships and coordination of volunteers. 


  1. Works with the Wellness Director to maintain attendance records, health assessments and other tools for support of participants. 


  1. Fundraising: Primary responsibility for grant writing, reporting, and for developing/maintaining grants pipeline. Plans and leads annual donor appeal campaigns. Works in partnership with the Board and Members Council on fundraisers throughout the year. This role is expected to secure and sustain funding that supports both the organization’s programs and the ED position itself. Coordinate with the City, State, and the Council on Aging on key grants, their management, and reporting. 


  1. Staff: Secures, interviews, trains, supervises, and evaluates paid and volunteer staff. Works with payroll processors to ensure staff are paid accurately and timely and that applicable leave is calculated and recorded.


  1. Supportive environment & intervention: 

Ensure that all staff:

  1. Remain alert and responsive to the needs of participants
  2. Offer time to individuals or groups to address personal challenges
  3. Maintain emergency numbers for participants
  4. Follow emergency procedures and generally accepted best practices for senior centers 
  5. Provide consistent, friendly customer service to current and prospective participants and partners
  6. Keep an “ear to the ground” so that programs are fresh, relevant, and dynamic while providing a safe, consistent calendar of activities
  7. Feel supported and have opportunities for professional development


  1. Facility: Maintains positive relationship with facility’s landlord; ensures that contracts with landlord are up to date and in compliance; ensures basic cleanliness of activity areas. Periodically assesses location needs.


  1. Records: Prepares reports to the New Orleans Council on Aging, Governor’s Office of Elderly Affairs, and all other contracts, grants, and required entities. Supervises and codifies office procedures. Handles correspondence, including thanking funders, bills, etc. Maintains office files. Assists Board of Directors with record-keeping. Maintains and makes recommendations for updates to board policies, including succession, HR, fiscal, etc. Ensures the charity's registration with the State of Louisiana remains current.


  1. Finances: Drafts annual budget for board approval in consultation with Executive Committee and CPA. Controls expenditures within budget constraints. Ensures bills are paid on time. Controls deposits, donation cycle (intake, recording, thanking, banking). Maintains accurate financial records in monthly review with CPA. Prepares 990 and annual audit/compilation with CPA.


  1. Board: Leads board meetings and meetings of the Executive Committee and prepares reports (director’s report, agenda, and budget) in collaboration with the Board President and Executive Committee. Works within areas of public relations, fundraising, fund expenditures, and outreach. Assists the Board in the design, implementation, and follow-through on long-range and strategic planning, including leading participation and staff support for annual retreat and annual election meeting as needed.


  1. Partnerships, External Relations, Marketing: Represents Kinship to the public, elected representatives, public servants, prospective participants, and others. Participates when possible with the local, regional, and national aging network, including attending related training opportunities. Maintains positive and ongoing relationships with local churches, related nonprofits, service groups, student groups, educational institutions, and businesses. Handles public appearances, including press, interviews, and conferences on behalf of Kinship. Maintains relationship with the New Orleans Council on Aging- including but not limited to ensuring we are in compliance with our government contracts. Maintains accurate public profile on Guidestar, Facebook, etc.

This role is onsite through midday Monday-Friday with flexibility to work from home in the afternoon.

Salary range starting at $60,000 commensurate with experience.
