Son of a Saint exists to enhance the lives of fatherless young men through mentorship, emotional support, development of life skills, exposure to constructive experiences, and formation of positive, lasting peer-to-peer relationships. Son of a Saint equips young men with the tools they need to become productive men. We provide a secure and consistent environment for them, through which they find hope, vision, and opportunity. Son of a Saint mentors’ most important role is simply to be a good example. 


Position Summary:

Son of a Saint is looking for a full-time education coordinator/career coach to join our team. This position will be divided into four components: (1) Academic monitoring and advocacy; (2) Tutor coordination (3) Career Exploration (4) Post-Secondary Planning Support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Monitoring, Planning and Advocacy (30%)

  • Closely monitor academic performance and provide responsive services to mentees on academic issues
  • Support an academic incentive program to encourage growth and achievement
  • Communicate with school staff and serve as an advocate at school meetings as necessary or requested
  • Assist students in the acquisition of study skills and academic opportunities
  • Provide system support to strengthen the efforts of teachers, staff, and guardians

Tutor Coordination (20%)

  • Manage tutors through interviewing, orientation/training, scheduling, utilization, engagement, and retention
  • Work with inquiring families on obtaining external tutoring services
  • Connect each boy in need of academic support with intervention planning and study hall
  • Ensure mentees and tutors report their interactions and performance progress 

Career Exploration (20%)

  • Work 1:1 with young men to identify interests and goals, from college and career plans, connect them with internship/shadowing experiences and relevant extracurriculars
  • Support with the writing of resumes/cover letters and provide feedback 
  • Rehearse job interview skills with mentees and provide guidance
  • Plan events, activities, and outings to provide opportunities for young men to learn about different careers
  • Initiate and maintain partnerships with corporate entities, organizations, and universities that can provide career exploration opportunities
  • Monitor mentee engagement and progress in these areas
  • Assess the effectiveness of internship programs

Post-Secondary Planning Support (20%)

  • Provide an individual planning system to guide students toward post-secondary goals
  • Consult with guidance/ college and career counselors at schools to ensure young men have access to resources necessary for entry into post-secondary education
  • Coordinate with other programming staff members to plan college visits and college-related events

Organization-Wide Responsibilities (10%):

  • Support programming, development, and organization-wide initiatives by actively engaging in the following opportunities:
    • Quarterly board meetings
    • Fundraising and development events, grants, and initiatives
    • Programming events, activities, and initiatives
    • Staff leadership development and team building
    • Recruitment, selection, and onboarding
    • Cross-functional special projects
  • Perform other agency and program-related duties as needed


Education/Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience working in education, job training, youth programming, or a related field
  • Must possess experience in a collegiate environment or understanding of the academic culture and must have the ability to effectively interact with school faculty, Son of a Saint staff, young men, guardians, and school administrators. 
  • Driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation
  • Experience working with middle school and/or high school students, incorporating cross-cultural competency to support and challenge them appropriately
  • Teaching experience in a classroom or out-of-school setting
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree is required

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, Son of a Saint staff, guardians, agency representatives and various members and groups from the community 
  • Knowledge of New Orleans schools and school systems preferred
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and is able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify student issues and problems and initiate actions to solve these problems
  • Ability to research and quickly develop knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, occupational, career and personal growth.

  • Candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to write by hand and use the keyboard to perform general functions.
  • Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously.
  • Visual acuity (close, distant, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus and view accurate color perception) needed for detail work, and computer use.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.

Working Days/Hours: 

  • This position’s schedule will be flexible to accommodate meeting with the young men, families, school staff, and community partners
  • The working days will predominantly be Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or evening hours
