Job Description

Communications Manager

The Louisiana Center for Children's Rights (LCCR) is looking for a skilled Communications Manager to develop the organization’s voice at the state, local, and national levels. This position is part of LCCR’s Policy Team. It works closely with LCCR’s Development Director and direct representation teams to educate, organize, and mobilize our community and partners to uplift client voices to advance LCCR’s advocacy priorities and build collective power to transform the youth justice system in the state of Louisiana.

The Community You Will Join

The Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights (LCCR) is a non-profit law office that fights to keep children out of the justice system so they can thrive in their homes and communities. We both represent individual children in their court cases and address the systemic issues that trap mainly poor, Black youth in the justice system. Juvenile Defense: As the juvenile public defender in New Orleans, our Children’s Defense Team represents over 90% of children in the city who come into contact with the juvenile justice system. We provide each child with a holistic team – a lawyer, social worker, investigator, and youth advocate – to address both the causes and consequences of an arrest. State and Local Advocacy: We advocate for policies that reduce the number of children in the justice system and provide better alternatives to arrest and incarceration. For the kids who do enter the system, we support policies that keep them safe, protect their rights, and get them home as soon as possible.

The Difference You Will Make

The Communications Manager at the Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights will develop and oversee LCCR’s communications strategy, guide our online presence and engagement, and implement key components of our communications and campaign strategy to build a community where young people thrive. This role is essential in amplifying client voices, shaping messaging, and ensuring that our work reaches and mobilizes the right audiences.

We are looking for a dynamic, visionary, and solutions-oriented communicator to join our staff team and help build the powerful movement for liberation for young people. The ideal candidate is highly organized, adaptable to changing conditions, and skilled at juggling multiple priorities with strong time management and accountability. They will bring expertise in strategic communications, digital communications, and community engagement, while also cultivating and maintaining relationships with local and national reporters and fielding media requests to amplify our mission. This role requires a deep belief in self-determination, community power, and both personal and systemic transformation.

Candidates should have experience in social media management and content creation and strong writing and communication skills. Additionally, they should be comfortable engaging with the press, crafting media pitches, drafting press releases, and ensuring that our messaging reaches key audiences through traditional and digital media channels. Familiarity with youth justice is highly valued.

Your Expertise

The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to LCCR’s mission of transforming the juvenile legal system, centering racial justice, and challenging systemic inequities through strategic communications using earned and owned media. Candidates should bring one to three years of communications experience in a social justice or non-profit setting, along with exceptional written and verbal communication skills, meticulous editing abilities, and a keen eye for design. The role requires experience facilitating messaging and developing communications strategies with diverse groups. Candidates must demonstrate good judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities, including responding swiftly to breaking news, occasionally outside of regular working hours.

Preferred qualifications include knowledge of the youth and/or criminal legal systems, particularly in Louisiana, as well as familiarity with New Orleans culture.

How We’ll Take Care of You

The position offers a salary of $50,000 to $66,000 depending on years of experience and based on an established pay scale. LCCR offers a suite of employee benefits that includes flexible time off, 3 mental health days, an Employee Assistance Plan, a hybrid (remote & in person) work environment, fully covered employee and child(ren) OR spouse health insurance, parental leave, and more! The position is full-time, and no other compensated work is permitted.

To Apply

Please send you resume and a cover letter to jobs@lakidsrights.org. In your cover letter please include (1) why you are interested in working to transform the youth justice system (2) how you reflect on your own privilege in your communications strategies, and (3) how you have addressed issues of equity or structural racism in your work.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

LCCR values diversity and is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. People of color, women, LGBT persons, people with disabilities, and those directly impacted by the legal system are encouraged to apply for all positions.
