Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Specialist/Educator will be a vital member of the Family Medicine Residency Program, providing expertise in the integration of behavioral health principles and practices within the primary care setting. The Behavioral Health Specialist/Educator will share responsibilities with the Program Director and other faculty for the design and implementation of the behavioral health curriculum, ensuring residents receive training sufficient to meet and exceed the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Program Requirements for the residency program. The Behavioral Health Specialist/Educator will focus on various domains including behavioral and community health, human behavior, psychiatry, ethics, doctor-patient communication, cultural humility, quality improvement, interdisciplinary approach, and well-being (for residents and faculty). Such training occurs during specialized didactic presentations, during rotations, one-on-one or group sessions with residents, and longitudinally while co-precepting with faculty physicians. The Behavioral Health Specialist/Educator will engage in scholarly activities within the Family Medicine Residency Program.
This position will be engaged in direct patient care at 40% effort, and 60% effort will be engaged in support of the residency program to include, but not be limited to, precepting and administrative responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

· Provide an advanced level of clinical social work and/or psychotherapy services to patients and families presenting at the Family Medicine Center (FMC) with psychosocial needs across the continuum of care.

· See patients clinically in practice independently as well as with the residents in co-counseling experiences.

· Contribute through patient care activities to the revenue of the FMC.

· Provide integrated behavioral health services at FMC by providing psychosocial evaluation and treatment.

· Provide opportunities for cross-discipline collaboration for resident physicians.

· Adhere to all department and facility procedures regarding documentation in the medical records.

 Teaching

Under the guidance of the Program Director and Associate Program Director:

· Direct all clinical educational and administrative duties associated with the behavioral sciences within the family medicine residency.

· Develop curriculum and deliver monthly lectures focusing on behavioral health, psychology, and ethics as part of the Family Medicine Residency didactic series.

· Be available via telephone during standard business hours for advice/consults related to patients seen by the residents and faculty.

· Provide clinical input for residents on behavioral health issues in patient panels.

· Serve as a role model for basic counseling skills relevant to the family physician.

· Administer a structured educational experience that residents report adheres to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) institutional and program specific requirements. The curriculum must be structured so behavioral health is integrated into the residents’ total educational experience, to include the physical aspects of patient care. The curriculum should follow guidelines established by the AAFP.

· Teach practical office counseling and communication skills to residents.

· Educate the residency team on available behavioral health community resources.

· Mentor and model the skills required to successfully meet the Family Medicine core outcomes using multiple modes of teaching such as direct observation, role play, integrated patient care, reflective practice, etc.

 Administration

 Assist with development of resident individualized learning plans.

· Provide regular reviews of the Family Medicine residents who are providing care to patients in the Family Medicine Center.

· Participate in resident feedback and evaluations (including via video reviews). Complete and submit in a timely manner, meaningful evaluations of residents and medical students.

· Work with other faculty to coordinate and integrate community health and patient advocacy.

· Participate in the interview, selection, and ranking process of residency candidates for the Family Medicine program.

· Serve as a member of the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) for the Family Medicine residency.

· Attend and participate in faculty related activities such as monthly faculty meetings, the faculty retreat, and faculty development courses.

· Provides counsel for stress management, personal wellness, and support to meet the needs of residents and faculty.

· Assist with the creation of faculty development materials and courses.

· Assist with wellness efforts.

· Complete periodic faculty development course hosted by the AAFP to ensure adequate knowledge of ACGME requirements. Complete periodic educational course on CMS documentation guidelines for billing when collaborating with trainees.

· Facilitate therapy groups and/or Balint sessions at least one time per month or as directed by the needs of the program.

· Provide personality learning behavior trait assessments annually and as needed.

· Provide psychological testing as needed.

· Perform additional duties as requested.

Scholarly Activity

· Contribute to knowledge through research, publications, and presentations related to behavioral science in Family Medicine.

· Involved in scholarly projects with residents and faculty that aim to advance the field of Family Medicine.

Requirements

Masters in   Mental Health Counseling, Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Ethics, or equivalent from an accredited university.

Three years experienceValid license to practice in Louisiana and credentialed with all required entities before hire.
