Library Makerspace Coordinator

Job Description
Minimum Starting Salary is $22.28/hour (Annually - $46,342.40)
We are seeking a Makerspace Coordinator to lead our new makerspace, inspiring creativity and innovation in the community. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with technology, teaching new skills, engaging with the community, and using tools like 3D printers, laser engravers, and sewing machines. The ideal candidate will have a passion for DIY culture, sharing knowledge, and strong troubleshooting skills to keep the space running smoothly.
Applicant must be able to pass a drug screen and have an acceptable background check and motor vehicle report (MVR).

Primary Duties
• Lead the day-to-day operations of the makerspace, fostering a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and
organized environment that encourages patrons to explore their creativity and develop new skills.
• Work with the Adult Programming and Outreach Librarian to develop and maintain partnerships
with local schools, organizations, and businesses to promote the makerspace and its offerings.
• Represent the library at community events, showcasing the makerspace’s equipment and
opportunities and actively engage in outreach to promote the makerspace resources.
• Coordinate with the IT department on equipment and software needs, including updates.
• Regularly monitor community needs and assess makerspace equipment to make recommendations to
ensure makerspace offerings remain relevant.
• Monitor supply levels and order more as necessary.
• Perform general troubleshooting and routine maintenance of makerspace equipment and software
while working with vendors for more advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment.
• Design, initiate, plan, host, and conduct STEAM and craft programs and activities in the
makerspace for the public, with a strong focus on serving older teens and adults.
• Work closely with adult, youth, and outreach staff to develop and execute maker- and STEAM-
related programming for patrons of all ages, both at the branches and in the makerspace.
• Coordinate program logistics, including booking presenters, collaborating with community
members, organizing equipment, supply setup, and take down.
• Provide guidance and support to patrons, assisting them with project ideas, troubleshooting,
and technical skills using makerspace equipment and software.
• Provide training and ensure compliance with safety and health procedures for safe usage of
makerspace equipment and tools.
• Provide instruction to patrons and staff, both one-on-one and in group settings, during
structured programs, open lab hours, and scheduled appointments.
• Receive, prepare, run, and complete patron 3D print orders.
• Collect fees for supplies and accurately prepare reports as required, including counting,
reconciling, and reporting daily money received, completing time sheets, and preparing monthly
reports.
• Participate in selecting, training, managing, scheduling, evaluating, and mentoring of the
makerspace assistant.
• Attend and participate in staff meeting discussions, including but not limited to all-staff
meetings and regularly scheduled supervisor’s meetings.
• Network with other libraries, professional library organizations, and the makerspace community
at large to ensure the makerspace stays up-to-date and relevant to community needs.
• Compile departmental reports, statistics, and budgets.
• Work cooperatively and in professional harmony with staff members, administrators, and the
community.
• Follow all library policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties and assignments as required.
Education, Experience, and Training
Required:
• Minimum of two years of college.
• Experience in managing creative or hands-on learning spaces, with a background in maker
culture, STEAM education, or related fields.
• Other combinations of experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills,
and abilities to perform job duties may also be considered.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEAM-related field.
• Public library experience working with technology and the general public.
• Experience planning and executing programs and events.
• Supervisory or management experience.
• Experience with makerspace-type equipment, including but not limited to 3D printers, sewing
machines, laser engravers, and vinyl cutters.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Proficiency and comfort with a variety of makerspace equipment and software, including
learning new skills and integrating new technologies.
• Interest and ability to learn about, use, and teach patrons how to use makerspace equipment.
• Communicates effectively orally and in writing with a demonstrated ability to speak in public
to both small and large groups.
• Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with library staff, patrons, and community organizations.
• Detail-oriented with demonstrated organizational ability, including the ability to
successfully manage multiple projects with tight timelines, schedules, and deadlines with little
supervision.
• Ability to work well in groups.
• Comfortable taking initiative and working in a highly variable role.
• Ability and willingness to maintain a flexible schedule to implement evening and weekend
programming.
• Knowledge of standard library procedures and experience in programming and makerspaces,
particularly in a public library setting.
Hours and Working Conditions:
• The weekly schedule will consist of 40 hours with some evening and weekend hours required. A
regular schedule will be determined in collaboration with the assistant director and West Regional
Librarian.
• Ability to lift and move items and materials up to 40 pounds in weight; push or pull carts
loaded with materials weighing more than 150 pounds.
