Department: Upper Elementary/Middle School
Reports to: Head of Middle School
FLSA Classification: Exempt (10-Month)
Hours: 40+ hours a week
Start Date: August 2025
Position Summary
The Louise S. McGehee School is now accepting applications for a dynamic, innovative full-time science teacher who enthusiastically invests his or herself in all aspects of the education process and the school-wide community. Qualified candidates will possess an educational background in science and will have at least two years of classroom teaching experience, ideally in an all-girls or independent school setting. A master’s degree in education or a science-related field is preferred.

The Louise S. McGehee School Science Department is committed to creating environments in which our students are motivated to learn and practice science. We provide our students with the tools to become lifelong learners by encouraging risk-taking in the classroom, supporting the development of their critical thinking and problem solving skills, and stressing the importance of communication and collaboration. As a result, students graduate with a strong foundation to be successful in STEM fields and develop a positive attitude towards the study of science.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Have the optimism, desire, and positive enthusiasm to work with Upper Elementary/early Middle School students and a rich background in the teaching of environmental, general science, life science, and/or physical science through inquiry and exploration.
- Maintain a full-time teaching load of science classes.
- Prepare a quality STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curriculum and present the material in an engaging manner.
- Foster an open, inclusive learning environment that supports all students and their families through word, action, curriculum, and teaching strategies.
- Demonstrate competency with student-centered technology, an interest in advancing and supporting its use to enhance student learning, and the desire to employ technology to connect with students.
- Collaborate with other members of the Science department to design and implement curriculum as well as employ recent research and national standards proven to lead to effective science learning.
- Have the ability to support students in their acquisition and development of key process skills related to scientific work.
- Develop cross-curricular projects across the grade level.
- Maintain a comprehensive online class syllabus and curriculum guide.
- Set clear expectations for students.
- Fulfill assigned duties to monitor students in various capacities, as designated by middle school protocols.
- Advise a group of students.
- Attend and contribute at grade level, division, and faculty meetings.
- Act as a flexible and collaborative member of the community whose work expands beyond the classroom to enhance the student experience at the school.
- Model a mindset of lifelong learning and the willingness to take risks that serve as growth opportunities.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and spoken, and a highly refined work ethic and positive spirit. Communicate regularly and appropriately with the student, parent, advisor, and division head about student academic and social progress.
- Be motivated to find ways to contribute to the life of the School through activities, events, coaching, clubs, etc.
Minimum Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in either science education or a bachelor's degree in science.
- A master’s degree in education or a science-related field is preferred.
- Prior teaching experience in either Lower School or Middle School setting.
- Demonstrated love of lower school and middle school students.
Work Conditions & Physical Capabilities:
- Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
- Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to reach, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
