Job Description

The Counseling Services Department of the University of New Orleans is seeking a full time Counselor to provide mental health services to UNO students.

 

Job Summary

·       Provides Individual and group counseling for students.

·       Maintains a caseload of 20-25 students.

·       Provides mental health assessments, treatment planning, short-term psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referrals, and career testing/ counseling.

·       Maintains specific expertise in mental health issues related to Black, Indigenous and students of color.

·       Provides consultation for university faculty and staff. 

·       Provides clinical consultation to unlicensed staff and interns. 

·       Participates in regular departmental staff meetings and training activities. 

·       Supports staff and interns by providing consultation and training on matters specific to intersectional cultural humility and responsiveness in a clinical setting.

·       Other tasks assigned by supervisor. 

  

Required Qualifications

·       Master's degree in counseling (LPC, LMFT, PLPC, or PLMFT); social work (LCSW, LMSW); or a Ph.D. in Psychology (Clinical or Counseling).  

·       A minimum of one year of clinical experience with adults (18 years and older) 

·       Basic knowledge of the value of evidence-based practice and its role in professional counseling or social work practice.

·       Basic knowledge regarding the range of normal and abnormal behavior in the context of stages of human development and diversity. 

·       The ability to select interventions, assessment tools, and consultation methods for different problems and populations. 

·       The ability to use the Ethical Decision-Making Model to respond to ethical dilemmas as they arise. 

·       Knowledge of the DSM-5.

·       The ability to identify problem areas and to use concepts of differential diagnosis.

·       Awareness of need for selection of assessment measures appropriate to population/problem.

·       Articulate a basic understanding of how intervention choices are informed by assessment (e.g., clinical intake, testing).

·       An understanding of the ethics, privacy and confidentiality laws for their profession. 

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation/public speaking skills. 

·       Experience working with a diverse client population.

·       Comfortable multi-tasking and prioritizing tasks without guidance.

·       Punctual with strong attendance history.

 

Desired Qualifications

·       Experience in a university counseling center providing personal, mental health counseling, career testing and counseling, and crisis intervention.  

·       Current unrestricted license within an accepted discipline to practice independently in the State of Louisiana.  

·       Experience with electronic scheduling and documentation software. 

·       Able to practice mental health counseling in multiple languages. 


Salary Range

$40,000 to $48,000 per year
