Job Description

Position Summary

The Director of Development is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program that garners resources and increases philanthropic support in fulfillment of St. George’s Episcopal School’s mission. The Director formulates and implements strategic fundraising activities intended to garner maximum support for the operational, capital and endowment needs of the school. The Director plays a central role in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors. The Director will supervise the work of the full-time Development Coordinator and will be responsible for hiring a part-time Development staff member. The Director reports directly to the Head of School and is an integral member of the senior leadership and advancement teams.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership to inspire a culture of philanthropy at St. George’s.
  • Lead a comprehensive fundraising program with a current annual goal of $500,000 to foster the highest level of support for the school.
  • Create and support strategies to strengthen relationships with the school’s constituencies.
  • Design and implement annual and special campaigns targeted to alumni, parents and other constituents.
  • Identify and solicit individual and corporate prospects for annual, capital and planned giving opportunities. 
  • Identify and solicit institutional funders, including managing grant proposal writing and reporting activities.
  • Ensure a stewardship and donor recognition program that deepens relationships, encourages continued engagement and builds increased support.
  • Manage the operations of the Development program, including establishing annual goals and strategies for all giving and programs, preparing the Development budget and monthly and annual reports on all giving activities and ensuring the timely receipting and acknowledgement of all donations.
  • Supervise and provide support to the Development Coordinator and other staff members and consultants working on the philanthropic priorities of the school.


Qualification Requirements


  • A bachelor’s degree and five plus years of successful fundraising and donor relations experience in a not-for-profit organization, preferably in an educational setting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team and with a broad range of groups
  • Demonstrated success in working closely with boards, donors, prospects and volunteers
  • Proven record of building a sustainable fundraising program and raising annual, capital, major and planned gifts
  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge (Blackbaud) or similar software; ability to use Google Workspace applications  including Gmail, Calendar and Drive (Docs, Sheets and Slides), among others; and ability to use an online student information system and safety/communication applications on a Chromebook, iPad and/or a smartphone
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • A sense of integrity, confidentiality, ethics and ability to carry out responsibilities in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures
