Job Description

School social workers are an integral link between school, home, and community in helping students achieve academic success.  They work directly with school administrators as well as students and families, providing leadership and direction in school discipline policies, mental health intervention, crisis management, and support services.  As part of an interdisciplinary team to help students succeed, social workers also facilitate community involvement in the schools while advocating for student success and mental health.


Education and Experience: 


A minimum of two years clinical experience with preference for clinical practice in a school based setting required.  Candidate must be licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners and certified by the Louisiana Department of Education.  Experience in and clear understanding of school based service delivery required. 


Knowledge and Ability Requirements: 


Must possess the ability to deliver integrated clinical services to diverse and challenging populations.  Candidates must be energetic, flexible, creative, innovative individuals who can develop strengths-based, student-centered support plans which support learning for students. Ability to function as a member of a team is critical.  Quality communication skills (both verbal and writing) are needed.  The ability to multitask, follow through, and work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is required.


General Function: 


Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Student Support, the Part Time Elementary School Social Worker performs a variety of clinical duties relative to the general and special education programs at the school building level.


Duties and Responsibilities: 

This position is established to serve as part of the team of support for all students enrolled in Homer A. Plessy Community School.  It is expected that the Part Time Elementary School Social Worker will fulfill the following:


  • Provide individual and small group counseling services. 
  • Provide classroom based interventions to support learning. 
  • Provide home visits if needed. 
  • Provide crisis support as needed.



  • Serve as a member of the pupil appraisal team, participate in eligibility meetings, initial

evaluation and re-evaluation meetings as needed when needed

  • Collaborate as an equal member of the IEP team regarding identification, eligibility and integrated service delivery in support of students with disabilities.
  • Attend annual and re-evaluation meetings when necessary. 
  • Participate in IEP Team meeting for those students who are not making sufficient

academic/behavior progress towards mastery of IEP goals.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of community resources available to students and

families. Refer out as appropriate.

  • Utilize research based and culturally sensitive related services to support and improve

student learning.

  • Responsible for required documentation demonstrating the delivery of services using

the electronic database specified by Homer Plessy Community School

  • Responsible for documenting parent communication and other data in required

database specified by Homer Plessy Community School such as, PowerSchool, etc.;

  • Completion of service logs, progress reports, IEPs, progress notes, Medicaid

reimbursement forms, social histories, and any other paperwork designated by

Homer Plessy Community School 

  • Responsible for filing required documentation (i.e, progress reports, IEPs, service logs,

parent communication, etc.) in each student’s special education file 

  • Maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to the

provision of special education services; ensure all clinical services adhere to all

regulations 

  • Collaborate with students, parents, special and general education staff, Chief of

Student Services, Head of School, and outside agencies as needed.


  • Provide parent education in the school community.
  • Assist in the provision of student orientation services.
  • Collaborate with outside agencies to share information and ensure creation of seamless service delivery plans for students.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chief of Student Support
