Full Time - $29,307.20 - $39,582.40 Annually
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the proper operation of motorized maintenance equipment used in the maintenance of assigned areas of the department. Work involves driving a truck; finishing cement; fixing waterlines; and operating tractors, bush hogs, backhoes, weed eater, machinery, and equipment. Reports to the Superintendent or assigned Foreman.
Duties of Responsibilities:
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Vehicle Equipment Operator III's perform a variety of work according to assigned work and/or supervisor. Duties may include the following:
Drives and operates trucks, dump trucks, flat beds, tandem, street sweeper, etc.
Hauls asphalt for the road; spreads asphalt and cement.
Takes down forms for cement.
Performs minor maintenance on vehicles.
Operates and hauls heavy equipment.
Follows safety guidelines and wears related safety equipment.
Receives and/or reviews various records and report such as work orders and dispatched calls.
Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as log book, vehicle maintenance list, and work orders.
Refers to other seasoned employees, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery such as street sweeper, flatbed / tandem truck, chipper truck, bush hog, curb dresser, Vactor drainage truck, tree maintenance bucket truck etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as shovel, rake, cement trowel, hand tools, blower, chainsaw, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as bleach, brushes, oil / gas, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Superintendent, Foreman, coworkers, and the general public.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs grounds keeping maintenance such as cutting trees and grass, performing weed eating, trimming trees, etc.
Performs labor work.
Performs other related duties as required.
Essential duty status position, will be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires three to four years of experience performing phases of grounds and facilities maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a valid Louisiana Class A commercial driver's license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a tractor, lawn mower and a variety of gardening and lawn maintenance tools. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Medium Work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to eighty pounds.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documents, and work forms. Requires the ability to prepare daily performance reports, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract totals; to multiply and divide; and to determine percentages and decimals.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment; to operate motor vehicles.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than giving or receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Public Works Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Vehicle Operator III. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures of grounds work, general maintenance and facilities operations as they pertain to the performance of duties of the position. Is able to complete daily activities within assigned time frames. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Has knowledge of the approved methods and materials used in the construction, repair and maintenance of buildings and related structures. Is able to anticipate the amount of supplies and materials needed for construction and repairs. Is knowledgeable in the safe operational procedures in the use of equipment, machines, tools and toxic agents. Is able to perform required duties and responsibilities in extreme weather conditions. Is able to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments.
Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interface with all City departments and divisions, co-workers and customers, and the general public.
Quantity of Work: Maintains effective and efficient output of all duties and responsibilities as described under "Specific Duties and Responsibilities."
Dependability: Assumes responsibility for doing assigned work and for meeting deadlines. Completes assigned work on or before deadlines in accordance with directives, City policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Accepts accountability for meeting assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.
