Note: This is an in-person position located in New Orleans, Louisiana.

I           BASIC FUNCTION


The Staff Accountant is a collaborative team player responsible for providing accounting and analytical support to CBC’s Liquid Cargo business units and performing other general ledger accounting responsibilities as assigned.  The Staff Accountant must be a highly organized and motivated team player with excellent communication skills who provides accurate and timely information to help them make better decisions to improve CBC’s performance on service, quality, and risk.


II         MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

            The Staff Accountant helps provide the discipline, information and analysis to help our leaders manage their business more effectively.  To maximize value to the business, the Staff Accountant must be engaged in and understand the business(es) they support, be involved on the front-end of issues, and provide informed information, analysis, and insight to be of maximum value to the decision makers.


1. Collaborate closely with the Liquid Cargo business unit, Senior Staff Accountant, and others within the Accounting department and in other areas of the company to ensure accurate accounting for our tank barge & towboat services.  

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the systems and processes used to bill customers for our liquid cargo services and make recommendations for improvements as need
  • Generate accurate and timely invoices for assigned liquid cargo activities, provide accurate general ledger posting information, and issue invoice packages to customers.
  • Coordinate with the business unit to collect past due accounts receivable and resolve invoice disputes to ensure timely cash flows and customer satisfaction.
  • Attend and actively participate in business unit financial meetings regularly to be informed of current operating activities to assess financial performance and understand expected profitability.
  • Prepare manual journal entries as needed to ensure revenue and expenses are recognized in the appropriate periods to provide accurate information for future decision making


2. Utilize our Tow Works logistics system to produce all billing for our Tankerman Services Group.


3. Serve as primary back-up for the Liquid Cargo Senior Staff Accountant to ensure billing maintains continuous coverage.


4. Help us systemize knowledge transfer and cross-training and develop methods of sharing information, abilities, and ideas across different areas of our business by documenting Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for assigned responsibilities to support continuous improvement of the business.


5. Other

  • Carry out internal control procedures associated with specific job responsibilities to ensure properly authorized and appropriate transactions.
  • Perform special projects as assigned, including data analysis, and providing insights into the data for management decision making.
  • Work effectively with other departments as needed to accomplish job functions.
  • Perform other duties as required and directed by management.
  • Carry out and the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and Mission of Canal Barge Company, Inc.



III.       ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:


The Staff Accountant will report to the Senior Staff Accountant responsible for Liquid Cargo Accounting.



IV.       EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and 1-3 years of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP and accounting controls. 
  • Experience with general ledger systems. Workday Financials experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).  Intermediate or higher Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience in marine transportation industry desired, but not required.
