Job Description

Jefferson Parish is currently hiring for a Signal Technician I position located on the East Bank in the Department of Engineering.

Kind of Work

This position is responsible for assisting with installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and the maintenance of traffic signal systems and other similar Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's). Employee installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, and performs the maintenance of various sensors, transmitters, and switches. Repairs traffic signal knockdowns and performs preventative maintenance on traffic signals. Responsible for installation and maintenance of electrical wiring, network cabling, data cable, conduit of various types, antennas, antenna cable, antenna masts, solar panels, lightening arrestors, power supplies, un-interruptible power supplies, batteries, surge suppressors, closed loop and wireless area networks, and Ethernet radio transceivers. Employee is also responsible for the installation and maintenance of emergency vehicle preemption equipment, inductive loops, microwave detectors, overhead span wire, signal heads, traffic counters, and multi conductor cable, traffic control and street name signs and school/pedestrian signals and flashers. Performs wiring for control cabinets and programs traffic controllers. Performs uploads and downloads of traffic control computer programs via remote connections. Retrieves alarm reports from intersections via computer modems.  This position is subject to standby and call-outs. It is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.  Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle necessitating a class D license, thus possession of a valid Class D Driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Minimum Requirements


Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; PLUSone of the following:

  1. Two (2) years of work experience as a Sign Technician II in the Jefferson Parish Traffic Engineering Division;
  2. Successful completion of a basic electricity/electrical curriculum from a recognized college or vocational/trade school;
  3. Completion of one basic electricity/electrical course from a vocational/trade school and one (1) year of full-time, paid work experience in the installation or repair of electrical apparatuses; OR
  4. Current I.M.S.A. (International Municipal Signal Association) certification in the areas of Work Zone Traffic Control Safety and Traffic Signals Level I or higher.

Salary

$28,778.00 Annually
