Job Description
Epidemiologist, Office of Public Health
Position Summary
This position is assigned to the Center for Preventive Health in the Office of Public Health (OPH) Bureau of Family Health (BFH) and is based in New Orleans. The Epidemiologist is responsible for data collection, analysis, and evaluation work involving the planning, gathering, analysis and reporting of statistical data associated with violence and injury surveillance and Maternal and Child Health outcomes with an emphasis on suicide prevention.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Public Health in applied epidemiology or biostatistics; one year of professional experience post Master’s.
- Prior experience with injury and/or surveillance operations or analytics preferred.
· Skills in the principles and practice of epidemiology, including multivariable analyses.
· Applied experience with statistical analysis packages (SAS and/or STATA or R).
· Ability to determine the applicability of epidemiologic data, draw appropriate; conclusions and make recommendations from analytic projects.
· Knowledge of survey design and development methods, program monitoring, and evaluation methods.
- Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail.
· Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
· Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation for required travel.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
· Demonstrate basic knowledge of sampling techniques, survey design, data linkage, statistical analysis techniques, and program evaluation.
· Utilize statistical software to obtain frequencies through univariate and bivariate analyses.
· Demonstrate basic knowledge of appropriate interpretation and translation of epidemiologic results.
· Develop expertise in suicide and non-fatal suicide related outcomes, data sources, surveillance systems and analytics.
· Coordinate the overall reporting of Louisiana’s Comprehensive Suicide Plan’s indicators including fatal and non-fatal suicide related outcomes, ensuring data are analyzed and reported in a timely manner.
· Manage suicide related data requests and collaborate with BFH mortality epidemiologists on MCH suicide related data requests and studies.
· Design, develop and implement program evaluation efforts for suicide prevention interventions.
· Maintain and manage grant evaluation plans.
· Perform or oversee data entry, data editing, analyses, and evaluation in support of partner interventions.
· Provide all data and assist in the development and dissemination of Louisiana comprehensive suicide prevention reports, data and policy briefs, other dissemination, and communications efforts; and submission of competing and continuation applications.
· Provide epidemiologic support on suicide related outcomes for state violence and injury advisory bodies and participate in meetings.
· Conduct suicide data updates at a minimum of once per year.
· Identify opportunities for leveraging data to respond to and advance policy initiatives.
· Participate in national workgroups for suicide surveillance and analytics.
· Represent the Bureau of Family Health in state and national meetings.
Salary/Benefits
· Salary range: $44,845-$55,000 commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.
