Girls on the Run New Orleans teaches girls (3rd-8th grade) critical life skills needed for life success, through an experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates physical activity – thus combining social emotional learning, mental well-being, and physical activity. In a typical year we program with over 350 girls throughout 30-40 different sites/schools in our New Orleans community. Our program cultivates the positive benefits of physical activity and movement while, at the same time, consciously addressing harmful habits like negative self-talk, poor self-esteem and more that are prevalent among adolescent girls and detrimental to their mental health. We do all of this to combat certain established realities for young women, including that only 21% of girls believe they have the skills to be successful leaders, physical activity levels in girls decline starting at age 10, and that their self-confidence begins to drop by age 9.
