The Louisiana Civil Justice Center

Founded in 2005 during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, LCJC was established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization to provide disaster legal assistance and connect displaced residents with critical legal services. Over the years, LCJC’s role in the justice community has expanded to help meet the growing legal needs of Louisiana’s poverty population and relive the burden on traditional legal service programs with already overburdened resources.

Today, LCJC’s mission is to facilitate the provision legal services to low-income, elderly and disaster-affected residents across Louisiana. Through a toll-free statewide hotline staffed by Intake Specialists and Staff Attorneys, LCJC is the first line of communication for thousands of vulnerable residents facing critical legal issues. In addition, LCJC partners with a variety of service organizations to provide free, in-person legal clinics on topics of importance to local communities. Through the hotline and public programming, LCJC effectively assists more than 10,000 individuals a year on issues of critical importance, such as custody of a child, maintenance of public benefits, housing and consumer debt.

LCJC is proud to partner with the Louisiana State Bar Association. With our mobile VOIP telephone system and computers, LCJC is designed to respond quickly to justice issues and emergency situations. As such, LCJC is also the agency responsible for emergency assistance in the event of any future disaster, such as a hurricane, under the Louisiana State Bar Association emergency disaster plan.
