Birthmark Doula Collective is a birth-justice, community-based organization that is structured as a member-owned cooperative. Our mission is to improve reproductive care and health outcomes for Louisiana families by promoting evidence-based maternal and infant care, advocating for childbearing families, and educating health providers, insurance companies and our communities. We provide birth doula services, postpartum doula services, childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenting education, and lactation support to the New Orleans metro area. With our birth doula services, we assist families in having the most empowering pregnancy, birth, and parenting experiences possible. We believe that every person deserves a doula and provide our services on a sliding scale. In addition to our direct perinatal health services, our ongoing birth justice projects include a biannual #BlackBirthMatters Convening, Community Breastfeeding Grand Rounds (continuing education for lactation professionals), our Birth Violence Toolkit for families and birth workers, our Queer Pregnancy and Parenting Project, and our campaign to start the first freestanding birth center in New Orleans. We are a member-owned cooperative and our decision making model is non-hierarchical and consensus-based. Our birth workers are our owners. We have four part-time staff members who are also doulas and who make organizational decisions, and we bring our large decisions to the whole group.
