Chewbacchus Art Camp is a 6-week arts camp for children ages 5-13, organized by the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus 501(c)3. We also offer a week long Winter Parade Camp during the December holiday. 

This summer’s week-long sessions are Book-Making and Contemporary Storytelling, Mask-Making and Headdresses, Experimental Theater, DIY Filmmaking, Puppetry and Parade Camp. Sign up for any combination of weeks!

Camp is held at Castillo Blanco Art Studios, 4321 St. Claude Ave, New Orleans, LA.

SESSIONS OFFERED:

Week 1: June 5 – 9 – Experimental Theater

In this workshop, kids will learn about various experimental theater techniques – audience participation, non-conventional theater space, discovery through performance and more. They will work in groups of 3-5 students to create their own story OR reimagine an already existing story. Throughout the week, they will work on scripts, construct sets, build props and costumes, and rehearse. They will also participate in improv games. At the end of the week, the kids will perform their show for friends and families at our theater party.

Week 2: June 12 – 16 – Book-Making and Contemporary Storytelling

In this fun and informative workshop kids will learn papermaking techniques using recycled materials. They will learn about different ways to tell stories through books – such as graphic novels, pop-up books, illustrated stories, and use a variety of mediums for their own illustrations (watercolors, oil pastels, collage techniques, colored pencil). Using their imaginations, they will brainstorm story ideas in small groups and then create their own book – creating their own paper, binding, and illustrations. At the end of the week, we will have a book reading and party for friends and family.

Week 3: June 19 – 23 – Mask Making and Headdresses

In this hands-on workshop, kids will learn about different styles of masks and headdresses from around the world, with an emphasis on those used to celebrate carnival. They will study their own faces and sketch their designs exploring color, shape, line and texture. Using a variety of techniques – including paper mache, craft foam and clay, they will create their own mask or headdress. The kids will then decorate their projects using acrylic paint, sequins, fabric, beads and gems, feathers, and more. At the end of the week, we will have an art show and party for friends and families.

NO CAMP – JULY 4TH Holiday Break

Week 4: July 10 – 14 – DIY Filmmaking

In this workshop, kids will learn about a variety of elements that go into storytelling through film. They will work in groups of 3-5 to create a script, develop characters, break down their story into scenes, and build sets, props and costumes to tell their story. Kids will have the option to experiment with stop motion animation, puppets and other creative storytelling techniques. The kids will film their movies using iPhones and edit on iMovie – learning techniques they can replicate at home with their friends. At the end of the week, we will have a film screening and party for friends and family.

Week 5: July 17 – 21 – Puppetry

Our campers will learn about the different elements of puppet theater – including the story, character, sets, props and sound effects. They will work in groups of 3-5 to either create their own story or reimagine a story they already know. The kids will learn a variety of techniques for making stick puppets, marionettes, hand puppets and full-body puppets. They will work with craft foam, acrylic paint, fabric, sequence, cardboard and a variety of other materials to fabricate their idea. At the end of the week, we will have a puppet show and party for family and friends.

Week 6: July 24 – 28 – Parade Camp

In this workshop, kids will learn different ways carnival is celebrated in New Orleans and around the world. They will learn about the history of different Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans, as well as traditions unique to Chewbacchus.Throughout the week, they will make costumes, shoebox floats and handmade throws, as well as banners and a contraption for our parade. On Friday, we will celebrate with a camp parade and party at Castillo Blanco.
