Job Description
The UNO Research and Technology Foundation is seeking a Commercialization Manager to help turn research into real-world impact. In this role, you’ll build strong relationships with UNO faculty, researchers, and external partners. You’ll evaluate research innovations, secure intellectual property, connect technologies with industry collaborators, and support startup formation. You’ll also assist with grants and Foundation initiated programming for the benefit of UNO.
Job functions:
• Solicits, screens, and evaluates innovation disclosures, including carrying out prior art searches;
• Prepares technology descriptions for marketing;
• Develops and recommends intellectual property protection strategies of selected disclosures;
• Facilitates communication between patent attorneys and inventors;
• Develops and implements strategies/plans for marketing inventions and technologies to industry;
• Conducts technology market research of selected technologies;
• Identifies potential commercial applications and business partners for innovations;
• Communicates industry feedback to faculty as needed;
• Collaborates with team to draft, negotiate, and execute licenses, and other related contracts such as license agreements, confidentiality agreements, joint invention agreements, research collaboration agreements, and inter-institutional agreements;
• Participates in University technology commercialization outreach and education;
• Promotes the mission of the organization by developing positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, legal counsel, prospective and actual licensees, and colleagues;
• Works collaboratively across various stakeholders within the University;
• Provides continuous management of existing licensing agreements for performance and compliance;
• Supports on grant writing, such as on SBIR/STTR, and Innovation programming and events; and
• Performs other duties within the scope of the position, as required by the Research and Technology Foundation
Competencies:
• Self-starter with ability to work independently as well as in a team;
• Knowledge of academic environment;
• Experience engaging researchers regarding their innovations;
• Experience using advanced features in Word and Excel;
• Experience writing about technical innovations; Grant writing experience preferred;
• Strong project management skills with proven problem-solving abilities
• Working knowledge of intellectual property;
• Ability to understand complex technology in multiple disciplines;
• Ability to communicate complex technical innovations to non-technical audiences;
• Ability to handle a wide variety of projects simultaneously to meet deadlines and be productive within a dynamic and ever-changing environment;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, peers, academics, and other professionals including external agencies with varied interests and perspectives; and
• Strong customer service skills
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or related field (Master’s/JD preferred)
- Knowledge of intellectual property and technology transfer
- Strong project management and communication skills
- Experience with research, innovation, or grant writing a plus
