VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DESCOURS 2009

What: DesCours, New Orleans’ third annual, free architectural and visual arts event, presented by AIA New Orleans. www.descours.us

When: December 8-13, 2009 (public exhibits open December 9-13, 2009.)

Location: New Orleans’ courtyards, walkways and building lobbies within the French Quarter and the Central Business District.

Cost: Free to the public.

AIA New Orleans, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, has several volunteer opportunities available for its upcoming DesCours event.

DesCours, an annual event now in its third year, is a free, five-day contemporary architecture, art and music event that looks toward the future in showcasing cutting-edge new media and interactive installations while embracing New Orleans’ rich cultural heritage. During DesCours, internationally recognized architects, designers and artists will transform spaces, both “hidden” and public, within the French Quarter and the Central Business District into destination places for visitors and locals alike.

Volunteers are needed for DesCours:

Docents: Twenty-eight people will be needed each night of DesCours—two people at each site—to direct visitors and answer questions regarding the spaces, installations, the artists and the musicians who will perform. Docents should have a friendly, helpful manner, good interpersonal skills and the ability to speak in public. An interest in history, art and architecture is a plus! Each site will also be monitored by a security guard.

Docents who would be interested in participating as leaders of the Tour DesCours walking tours should state this interest when calling.

Benefits to Volunteers:

Among the many perks of volunteering for DesCours is the opportunity to interact with and learn from world-renowned artists, architects and musicians! AIA New Orleans, a non-profit organization, produces over 60 events, large and small, each year to educate and inform its members and the general public as concerns issues of the built environment. As the producer of DesCours, AIA New Orleans relies heavily on individual and corporate sponsorship and on the generous contributions of its volunteers!
