Title: Assistant Controller
Reports to: Controller
Salary Range: $45,000 – $52,000
Under the direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller will prepare financial statements that conform to generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements and ensure that accounting reports are accurate and timely.
Assistant Controller is responsible for the company's day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, revenue recording, job costing, payroll, cash management, fixed asset accounting, accounts payable/receivable.
Primary Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Recommend and implement accounting procedures, ensure database optimization and manage operational data to ensure system controls for data integrity and accuracy. Position interacts with construction management and maintains a dotted line reporting relationship with the Director of Construction.
• Lead month end closing and financial reporting process including account analysis and general ledger account reconciliation
• Preparation of annual budgets
• Supervises preparation and approves the recording of monthly journal entries
• Audits work flow to assure that all accounting transactions are appropriately authorized and recorded in the current accounting period
• Substantiates expenditures reported on expense reports for proper authorization and adherence to policy
• Reviews monthly revenue recording for accuracy
• Reviews monthly bank reconciliations
• Monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions and process reconciliations in a timely manner
• Identifies, recommends and implements corrective measures for internal control compliance
• Develops operational procedures and documents data flow
• Prepares and distributes job cost reports and assists construction management with interpretation, variance identification and resolution.
• May train staff on internal control procedures and assists Controller as needed
• Works on special projects and assists with yearly audit preparation
Core Competencies
• Technical acumen, creative thinking and problem-solving skills
• Ability to convey complex financial information in a clear, concise way
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accrual base accounting and organizational auditing
• A wide knowledge base of different software systems and strong computer usage experience
• Application of financial analysis methods
• Job costing and variance analysis
• Strong cost accounting and analytical skills in job cost environment
Education/Training
• B.S. degree in Accounting, CPA/CMA Certification desirable
• Five or more years of experience in accounting preferably in construction related industry
• Three or more years experience with QuickBooks
• Non Profit experience and knowledge of grant reporting processes
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite
• Strong communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions
Standard 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule, but seasonal business demands or during month-end may require extended presence at the office.
